The five lines of vivência

Rolando Toro organised the experiences of Biodanza into five lines. Every class combines them in balance.

The five lines are paths for expressing each person's potential. None is more important than the others; the aim is for them to grow together.

Vitality

The line of energy and the joy of living. It includes rhythm, coordination and the ability to alternate between action and rest.

In class it appears in group dances to lively music, rhythmic walks and playful moments.

Sexuality

In Biodanza, sexuality is understood broadly: the pleasure of being in your own body, of feeling and of moving with fluidity. It involves no sexual activity of any kind.

In class it shows up in fluid, sensitive dances that help you live in your body with more ease and less tension.

Creativity

The capacity to express yourself, to innovate and to create something new, in dance and in life.

In class it appears in free, expressive dances where each person finds their own movements.

Affectivity

The capacity to form bonds through friendship, empathy, generosity and love.

In class it comes through in circles, encounters in pairs and moments of care. Contact is always gradual and by invitation, and each person decides how far to go.

Transcendence

The experience of feeling connected to something larger than ourselves: the group, nature, life.

In class it appears in slower, contemplative moments, often near the end of the session.

Identity and regression

The theoretical model also describes a movement between two states: an intense awareness of yourself, called identity, and moments of surrender and deep rest, called regression. A balanced class passes through both and always ends with a return to activity.
